The RISD mascot is "Scrotie," a giant penis with a red cape. The cheerleaders are named the "Jockstraps," because they support the Nads.

RISD students claim Cooper Union to be their arch rival in sports events, and the two hold an annual hockey match known as the "Supportive Cup"."

RISD sports have flucuated over the years with the RISD archives containing photos of football, baseball, and basketball teams spanning the very early 20th century. Yearbooks and alumni reveal the RISD Student Association funded basketball teams throughout the 50's and 60's and were called the 'Nads'. An ice hockey team formed soon after using the same name, 'Nads'. The ice hockey team played through the 70's, 80's, and 90's with little record of other athletics. In 2000, a new basketball team was formed under the name 'Balls' to compliment the ice hockey team, each with their own slogan: "When the heat is on, the Balls stick together", and "Go Nads" (deliberately sounding like gonads). Currently these are the two most active and organized sports teams at RISD, with basketball being the only team playing varsity level competition.
